I remember being a student in Liverpool when one time my Mum came to visit. We went out for lunch and I suggested eating at the new noodle restaurant that had opened.
Being a little younger than I am now, and not inaugurated into the world of foreign cuisine, I confidently ordered a “Habanero Chili Chicken Curry”.
As I sat to eat, little did I know that what I thought were cherry tomatoes were actually “Habanero” chillies, which until 1999 were listed in the Guinness book of records as the “World’s Hottest Chili”, about 100 times hotter than a Jalapeno.
As you can imagine, when I took my first bite of what I thought was noodles, chicken and cherry tomatoes, I had a very unfortunate surprise!
Later, when I became a Christian, I found my experience of evangelism was not dissimilar. In my head I thought I had the best news in all the world, and that everyone would love it and respond to it, just as I had.
As it happened, I was in for another unfortunate surprise when I realised quite how difficult evangelism is. There is a lot of discouragement and difficulty. Maybe you feel the same?
I guess most of the people reading this will be people who stand in the Methodist tradition, and of course we stand in the shadow of Wesley’s heart-warming encounter and his 50 years evangelistic career.
I do not claim to be the next John Wesley. But what I do hope to do in a really quick way is explain why I think evangelism is so important. So, here are my four reasons for why evangelism is so important and why we should do it.
Firstly, I think evangelism is in the very DNA of Methodism as a movement. Today, evangelism is a core part of “Our Calling” and is also integral to the “four all’s” of Methodism.
If “all can be saved” we must also ask with Paul, the Apostle “how can they believe in him if they have never heard about him? And how can they hear about him unless someone tells them?” (Romans 10.14). As we often sing, God has “opened the life-gate that all may go in” – let’s tell people the life-gate is open!
Secondly, Methodists say that “all need to be saved”. I take this to mean that every person needs to be saved from sin, saved from the consequences of sin, and brought into a relationship with God.
Thirdly, I think salvation is only through faith in the substitutionary death and resurrection of Jesus, and so evangelism is pointing people to “come to the Father through Jesus the Son.”
Fourthly, Jesus is so wonderful, amazing, beautiful and powerful and worth following with all we have. As such, I think the “why” of evangelism is located in the power, grace, work and wonder of Jesus, who is in himself the most soul-satisfying treasure in the universe.
If you have a similar heart for evangelism, I would love to invite you to the Mission Meeting taking place on 14th May at 7.30 pm at Portobello Methodist to discuss evangelism.
In Christ, Tom
